Keith Floyd Cookery Collection Review

It is unfortunate that this DVD set is difficult to find, not only in light of Floyd's terrific culinary contributions but that he sadly passed away a year ago, far too soon. I first saw Floyd on PBS in the 80s &/or early 90s and I was hooked. As a child I watched PBS navigating between watching Mr. Rogers and Julia Child. The first cookbook I ever bought was Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Like Julia Child, Keith Floyd was a pioneer and innovater. I learned much from and was inspired by him nearly as much as I was from Julia. Now to the DVD set. I recall having read some comment that the quality of the DVD set was not very good. When I ordered the set, I had reservations about the series because of that but found all of the DVDs I've viewed thus far to be perfectly fine quality. I am disappointed that for some reason the series "Keith Floyd on England and Ireland" was not included. You can view portions of them on YOUTUBE. The set is also missing his series on fish. Thus far, I've viewed 7 of the 14 discs in the set and I've enjoyed them completely. Keith never offers apologies and is irreverent and says it like it is. He is devil may care and I feel like I'm there with a good old chum, one on one, when he is on camera. I know there are times when recipes are rather glossed over quicker than one might desire but they were obviously dealing with and thinking about the time constraints when it came to editing the shows for TV. Like charming Andreas Viestad's cooking show (who I wonder if he was inspired by Keith Floyd), the scenery is more often than not quite beautiful. I'm currently reading Floyd's very down-to-earth biography "Stirred, Not Shaken" and it really is a nice companion to viewing his shows and how they came about. There is also a very touching bitter-sweet and humorous documentary-interview of Floyd conducted by a long time actor friend of his. It is in series on YOUTUBE. I'm not certain how close it was to the time his death last September (2009), but he sadly looks far, far older than his (I believe) 65 years of age. He truly was a wonderful, colorful, generous, smart and interesting man who enjoyed life and was what you see is what you get kind of guy. Like Julia Child, he is definitely someone I would have loved to have known.
