Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence Review

This marvelous film, based on my favorite novel "The Seed And The Sower" by Sir Laurence Van Der Post, is light years away from the stereotypical prisoner-of-war film. It is so because of its profound understanding of clashing cultures, the hatreds that drive them, and the love that redeems hostile nations time and time again. David Bowie is often cited as the main character, but in actuality, his is a compelling supporting role. Tom Conti has the best role of his career as Lieutenant Colonel John Lawrence, a British officer imprisoned in a camp on Java. Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto scored the film and also plays Captain Yonoi, the aristocratic, Shakespeare-quoting commandant of the camp. These two characters have a strong relationship which, nevertheless, is handicapped by the fact that Lawrence understands the Japanese better than Yonoi understands the British. Yonoi, and Bowie's character, Major Jack Celliers, are wracked with guilt over incidents in their past; Yonoi was unable to be with, and die with, his comrades, the "shining young officers" of Japan's February 1936 military coup. Celliers betrayed his deformed younger brother while attending boarding school. Lawrence is caught in the middle of these two tortured men. He is repelled by the brutality of the Japanese, even as he respects them, and their samurai code of honor. Indeed, wayward Japanese guards are dealt cruel and lightening-fast corporal punishment by their officers; and mistreatment of the prisoners is due to cultural belief, not simple sadism. The beauty of this film lies in the empathy that ostensible enemies feel for one another, and the unexpected kindnesses they show toward one another. But Yonoi's devotion to bushido, and blindness to the British sense of honor, leads to a startling climax. If the final scene doesn't make you weep, then get your heart checked, will you?

An amazing film, only slightly marred by a few botched scenes and poor editing. (Oshima rarely shot more than one take.)

Product Description

A portrait of the artist & concert documentary, 'Jon Dee Graham: Swept Away' is the story of a largely overlooked figure in American music. A local hero in Austin, Texas, Graham struggles to build a national name for himself.

Jon Dee Graham: Swept Away, A Rock and Roll Documentary Review

Austin singer-songwriter-guitarist Jon Dee Graham's music defies easy descriptions. His songwriting and distinctive guitar prowess speak powerfully and directly to the deepest of human emotions. Graham is at once aligned with our darkest, most fearful moments and our bravest, most fearless instincts. Love and hope thread through Graham's songs giving listeners a lifeline they too can follow.

Graham's work is both luminous and built to play loud. His songs are personal, extremely expressive, poetic and passionate. He celebrates both the tender mysteries of love and the feral grace of a loud electric guitar solo, often simultaneously.

National documentary filmmaker Mark Finkelpearl was so moved when he discovered Graham's work that he spent over a year creating a documentary to bring Graham's music to a larger audience. SWEPT AWAY, A ROCK `N' ROLL DOCUMENTARY, was released on DVD in May 2008. Finkelpearl's credits as a filmmaker include work for the Discovery Channel (American Chopper), the Travel Channel (launching the World Poker Tour), TLC, National Geographic Television (the Explorer series) and WQED/Pittsburgh. In addition Finkelpearl is a knowledgeable roots-rock music fan and concert promoter. His immersion in both worlds allowed him to bring an intimate perspective to SWEPT AWAY. Finkelpearl gives audiences a real sense of what it's like to be a working musician these days. He crafts a portrait of Graham that is, fittingly, as much a radiant labor of love as Graham's own music is.

Finkelpearl spent time interviewing Graham and capturing his daily life as a father, family man and singer-songwriter. The stuff of family and home is at the core of the music that comes out of Graham's living.

Finkelpearl also charts Graham's professional career from in-demand sideman to frontman and songwriter, capturing the dignity, grace and humor at the core of this beloved Austin artist. Graham's name has been on the roots-rock/Americana radar for years. He is a veteran of Austin supergroup The True Believers, which also included Alejandro Escovedo, and Graham was also part of other popular Austin groups The Resentments and punk-rock band The Skunks. In 1992, Patty Smyth covered Graham's song, "One Moment to Another" on her album, PATTY SMYTH. Graham was named Musician of the Year in the 2006 Austin Music Awards. Graham's most recent studio release is the acclaimed 2006 recording, FULL.Full In November 2007 came the CD SWEPT AWAY Swept Away, featuring selected songs from the live performances captured for Finkelpearl's film.

Graham began a solo career in the late 1990s that has produced a remarkable series of recordings delving deeply and poetically into the questions of everyday life: work, love, loss, death, raising children and keeping hope alive when the world seems to be working against you. Graham's music, at its core, is illuminated with the notion of choosing hope, choosing joy, choosing to believe, even when the world presents you with mountains of experiences to contradict your choice to be hopeful.

Finkelpearl also tackled the task of capturing the magic of Graham's live performances for the DVD, giving the audience a front-and-center spot as Graham performs. The centerpiece of the live sets is a sizzling recording of Graham at his favorite Austin nightspot, the Continental Club. Additional electrifying and beautifully shot concert footage was captured in several other Austin locations including the Saxon Pub, where Graham's friend James McMurtry wandered in and makes a cameo appearance.

Finkelpearl's documentary captures the power and poetry of Graham's live performances, which truly transport listeners to an altered state of consciousness: vibrating to the frequency created by Graham's love for his music and the love at the heart of his words.

Hard-core fans who are already Graham converts will find the `comment' track recorded by Graham, bassist Andrew Duplantis and filmmaker Finkelpearl an added bonus in the truest sense, capturing Graham at his sweetest and funniest. If you're looking for real music that speaks to the core of real life, this is it.

Product Description

The saintly Fr. Damien went to the Hawaiian Islands in the late 1800's to work with the lepers confined on the island of Molokai. He died himself a leper after serving for sixteen years. Terence Knapp gives a stunning performance in this one-man television drama of Damien's great compassion for humanity and love of God. Nationally acclaimed, this film won many awards including the prestigious Peabody Award.

Damien Review

I have lived with "Damien" on VHS and in my memory for many years. I saw the original broadcast in Hawaii. While my VHS is now gone, we can be grateful that through this DVD production this excellent play and brilliant performance will be preserved for the future. The former head of the Drama department at the University of Hawaii, the professional actor Terence Knapp plays Father Damien in this one man tour de force. He gives a truly great performance in a play that is beautifully written by Aldyth Morris. This is one of those performances that is not to be missed. Terence Knapp captures your attention and interest from the very first lines and never lets you go. You are with him all the way - through Father Damien's dreams, doubts, tests and difficulties. Only those whose souls are deadened will not well up at the final scenes. This is a performance which captures the essence of a great man who sacrifices himself for others, whose love and will to service for others emerges from doubts and setbacks for the pure love of God and not for any earthly honors or titles, and from this simple man comes the real triumph of the human spirit. Although Father Damien's struggles and service among the lepers in the leper colony of Moloka'i are rooted in his deep commitment to his Catholic faith, his story transcends the religious and will resonate with every viewer regardless of individual faith. As a Baha'i I can see the universal values of spiritual love, service, and a life of sacrifice and commitment to God. Knapp's transcendent performance captures the essence of Father Damien and universalizes his life to such an extent that you will have trouble thinking of Father Damien in any other way. It's a performance that gets under the skin; you can't forget it. Knapp is Damien. Although I assume this "Damien" has remained virtually unknown and undiscovered outside Hawaii where it originated, thanks to DVD "Damien" can be preserved and now be shared with millions. Highly recommended

Mills Brothers Story (The)

The Mills Brothers Story Review

I've been in the business of country music broadcasting for 50 years. However, The Mills Brothers have been my favorite musical act since I was a youngster in high school. Their blend, their unmatchable talent and stage presence held me in awe every time I heard one of their recordings or saw them on stage, as I did back in the 70s at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas. As a matter of fact, I saw them three times within a week and lifted one of their posters which is still attached to a wall in my office. Most important to me, I had the pleasure of meeting Donald Mills and when he passed away recently (the last of the brothers), I attempted to find any and all movies or television bits available on them. Luckily, I found this video! I can't really put into words how this great presentation satisfied my every wish of seeing The Mills Brothers in action with truly outstanding sound and spoken information that I categorize as the best bio study of a musical group I have ever seen. Certainly, I may be a bit overwhelmed because of the subject matter. However, if you are a fan of The Mills Brothers, you will love every minute of almost an hour of entertainment in this well edited, super produced video by a group that will never be matched.

Product Description

Masterpiece by Ra l Ruiz. Year 2010 Synopsis: I was fourteen, and I didn't know who I was at all... Mysteries of Lisbon plunges us into a veritable whirlwind of adventures and escapades, coincidences and revelations, sentiments and violent passions, vengeance, love affairs, all wrapped in a rhapsodic voyage that takes us from Portugal to France, Italy, and as far as Brazil. In this Lisbon of intrigue and hidden identities, we encounter a series of characters all somewhat linked to the destiny of Pedro da Silva, orphan in a boarding school. Father Dinis, a descendent of the aristocratic libertines, later becomes a hero who defends justice, a countess maddened by her jealousy and set on her vengeance, a prosperous businessman who had mysteriously made his fortune as a bloodthirsty pirate; these and many more all cross in a story set in the 19th century and all searching for the true identity of our main character.

Digipack Box-Set 6 DVD - Mysteries of Lisbon (Mist rios de Lisboa) by Ra l Ruiz [REGION 2] Review

A four hour film spinning round the New and Old Worlds and interlinking a dozen of characters, noble and not-so-noble, is mostly a story of an eighteen century Portuguese young aristocrats' illegitimate son and the good Samaritans surrounding every his step.

It is hard to understand what was mysterious in then Lisbon because rather intrigues and sometimes quite illogical, unexplainable actions were depicted.
Well, perhaps, that is what "a difference in cultures" from perspective historical is.

Technically, it is hard to comprehend a reason for producing a feature itself on two discs while Scenes were presented on three DVDs as to date eight hour actions possess just one disc only.

Beautiful cast, nice performing of a low budget movie.

The accomplished French violinist Christian Ferras performs works by Sibelius, Stravinsky, Franck, Bach, and Mozart, in these remarkable and vintage television performances. 118 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English PCM mono.

Christian Ferras Plays Sibelius, Stravinsky & Franck (EMI Classic Archive) Review

Unlike most of the other violinists featured in the excellent "classical archive" EMI series, Christian Ferras DOES require an introduction. Less known than other violinistic superstars such as Oistrakh, Kogan, Szeryng, and even Grumiaux (and Ferras was very much the equal of these great musicians), Christian Ferras was a prodigy on the violin. His recordings of all the major works with conductors such as Karajan and others gained the respect and admiration of musicians the world over. Strangely enough, he took his own life just as the second dawn of his career was to start, which is perhaps one reason for his Lilliputian reputation when compared to the aforementioned greats.
Still, these video recordings of his playing show Ferras at his interpretive and artistic peak, where he takes a number of "unconventional" risks in the Sibelius Concerto, while his Franck Sonata and Faure Berceuse (originally written as a sight-reading exercise for conservatory examinations) demonstrate his Gallic sensibilities to the extreme. It is a shame that such "schmaltzy" playing might be derided in this day and age of cerebral performances, for even his Bach (which is quite reserved, actually) is excellent, showing Ferras' versatility as a player.
The somewhat perplexing inclusion of Zino Francescatti as a bonus on this DVD is nonetheless joyously received, for his -thankfully complete- Mozart K218 is wonderful to behold. Whenever one hears or sees Francescatti play, a hint of smile has to appear on one's lips, and this recording certainly does not disappoint.
The one annoying thing about this DVD (and one is nitpicking here) is the occasionally awful camera angles and "techniques" the photographers choose to employ. Done with a keen eye for the cheesy as opposed to the useful, we are oftentimes treated to an extremely close (and unflattering) view of Ferras' face as he plays the Sibelius, or his chest (thus showing the bow sans violin). The ultimte cheesy camera moment happens somewhere in the Sibelius, when in the middle of a particularly dramatic moment, the camera zooms out suddenly, causing any one with an inkling of taste to groan inwardly.
Still, this is all not so important in a truly wonderful collection of gems of the classical archive, with excellent sound and picture quality. Well worth the money.
