Position: Impossible "Guerrilla Jiu Jitsu" Review

I loved this set. It has a lot of advanced material and not all of the stuff on it is actually useful for me. The flying attacks are way too advanced. That said some of the submissions and the counters, and his technique for teaching throws is incredible. Some of the foot sweep counters he showed are really cool and I feel they should be very useful for me in practice. I loved some of the foot sweeps (from the side) he showed and also the counters to those. I should also mention that Dave's book guerrilla jiu jitsu was incredible and I used it as one of my main inspirations back when I was devoted to training and to improving my jiu jitsu. I would rate this set as well the Saulo Ribeiro set as the best jiu jitsu instructionals on the market. Dave teaches as well as Saulo Ribeiro in my opinion. Furthermore these instructional's are very interesting to watch, unlike the ultra boring to tears, instructionals from groundfighter.com, like say Marcelo Garcia's submission grappling series. My favorite disc is probably disc one: secrets of the judoka. This disc contains many incredible takedowns. I have never really learned many efficient takedowns at my jiu jitsu school and this dvd fills that gap quite well I believe. Most jiu jitsu fighters have poor throwing ability in my opinion (other than of course Helio Gracie who seemed to have excellent throwing skill). Even Marcelo Garcia said that he relies on wrestling to get the fight to the mat (i.e the bread and butter of his takedowns game is single and double leg takedowns). My only complaint is that the camerawork is pretty bad. The cameraman tried too hard to focus on the picture at certain critical moments, but that just made the picture blurry. Of all the instructionals I own (which may be around a dozen, if not more) this has the worst camerawork by far. The material is great, the camerawork isn't.

The picture of this DVD may not be the perfect one (which is a pity) but it is definitely worth watching. This is one on those rare films which prove that a long and complicated book can be filmed. Everything... from actors, who gave some outstanding performances, to sets, is almost exactly as I imagined it while reading the novel. It is not just a romantic story as it is shown in the other film versions, but a very serious, tragic social drama. This film is by far the best adaptation of the great novel.

As Told By Ginger is one Nickelodeon's lesser known Nicktoons. Yet it combines some of the finest animation from the Klasky-Csupo studios (Rugrats, All Grown Up) with often clever writing from the independent series creator Emily Kapnek. ATBG gives a fresh take on the classic 'girl-in-junior-high' theme.

With this package you get two of the series tv-movies (aka Nickflicks) and a few episodes from the first season. Of the two, 'The Wedding Frame' is definitely the better one. Not only do you get the series finale (with a vintage Ginger surprise ending) but also two strong episodes with 'Stealing First' and the character-defining 'Dare I, Darren'.

'Far From Home' has a strong start but the script loses track halfway through the movie. But you also get the series first-ever episode 'Ginger The Juvey', which gives a great introduction to the main cast.

In short: a must-have for all fans and anyone who thinks a US animated series has to be either cartoonish junk or overly sappy melodrama.

Ghost Keeper Review

On a wintery New Year's Eve two women (Jenny and Chrissy) and one man (Marty) embark on a short snowmobile excursion. When the snowmobile breaks down, they are forced to seek refuge in a deserted hotel. There they confront powerful evil forces. "Ghostkeeper" is a pretty creepy and atmospheric horror film which will keep you guessing until the end. The acting is solid and the atmosphere of fear and total isolation is well-captured. The location (snowy mountains and a mansion in the middle of nowhere) provide some chills. Check it out if you are a horror fan.

All of these DVD's were released individually originally, and can be referenced on Amazon for other reviews. Understanding The Universe is from 1996, If We Had No Moon from 1999, Ninety-five Worlds And Counting from 2001, The Day The Earth Nearly Died and Unfolding Universe from 2002.

I got the collection for the Moon and Died programs that I had liked. I also enjoyed Understanding. Worlds was a bit flippant for me. Unfolding was a bit too busy for me like so many modern productions tend to lean towards these days, and you may find it depressing.
