Magnificently directed by Sidney Furie, this terrific thriller has one of Michael Caine's most memorable performances, and a sensational score by John Barry.Caine's Harry Palmer is a marvelous character...an anti-Bond...a guy in a dull job who suddenly finds himself in extraordinary circumstances. He has his quirks...he goes against authority, has his sharp wit, his gourmet food, and "that look" behind the horn rimmed glasses.The plot revolves around a "brain drain" of scientists in England, and has spies, the CIA, and all the usual suspects...which in this case are a little harder to predict.With brilliant writing (Bill Canaway/James Doran), superb cinematography (Otto Heller), and some good character actors (I love Alice the office lady...an anti-Ms. Moneypenny !) this is a film that will keep you interested for many viewings...suspenseful, amusing, and you'll just be wild about Harry. The Bigamist Review

If you have read my other reviews, you know I like complex, layered topics. Ida Lupino is now my role model as a filmaker actress. If this film were made today it would be called and "indie". Back then it was called "low budget". Clearly, though, this type of thoughtful, well acted, sensitive, insightful look at a difficult subject is where the indie movement has come from.

This film handles the subject of Bigamy from the standpoint of the story of this "regular guy" who ends up in a situation we come to understand from all its angles, who allows himself to be undone by applying to adopt a child and submitting to the background check.

I can not begin to describe how well this is handled. For a subject that reeks with potential melodrama, every single element is drawn from the characters, and the choices they are making. Joan Fontaine clearly had courage and an eye for thoughtful and controversial subjects (remember, Hitchcock's suspicion was supposed to - from the book story - end in her complicity in her own murder at the hands of her husband). She handles her role here so deftly... the character that we assume to be the "perfect wife" is unveiled as being very myopic and disregarding her marriage.

Ida Lupino gives herself the role of the working girl who asks no questions, so that she doesn't have to hear any lies. Edmund O'Brien, usually cast as the hulking tough, must have been delighted to have this morally complex, but remarkably unconflicted role. This film is simply a revelation. What is lovely is that the film recognizes all the typical things society would say about this situation, but we see the individuals, and they see each other, with human foibles and compassion.

Clearly, too this is one of the precursors to films like "Days of Wine and Roses" and "A Patch of Blue" in the next decade... films that took basically ordinary characters and put them in situations that were frowned on by society. The material is "of it's time," the elements and attitudes toward it would be very different today. But this is simply a masterful moment of film history that stands up to time.

Last Scandal Review

Twenty plus years of Hallyu Korean dramas circling the globe, getting their tormentors to drink the Kool Aid - why? Because the Japanese filmed the Comfort Women assaults.

This "last scandal" is so unbelievable in what the middle aged single mother does with no embarassment that it is suspicious and as the fourth Kdrama viewed in succession recently, it can't be a coincidence that Kdramas make a point of their male leads having to stand up for the female leads against society. We don't have that in America and its not in Chinese cinema where both males and females get the short end of the stick. It's really NOT a thing in America the way it is in Korea - not even Cinderella needs her Prince to fight her battles - they just solve their problems. There has to be a reason that the Koreans have been selling this to the world.

Korean dramas are selling affection and it is only addictive to a select group.

It's interesting that this 2008 drama could be an alternative reality for Popular in Japan Bae Yung Joon. It does not make any sense that someone like that is still single in a country famous for its high mountains and beautiful women and if he did lose his idol status with a revelation of a long marriage and children, he could always fall back on the older brother's character of having a successful entertainment company.
