How to Listen to and Understand Great Music, 3rd Edition Review

I don't have the DVD, I have the audio cassette version of the 3rd edition. So, I can't comment on what you might see, only what you will hear. For a course that is all about music, I didn't think it worth the extra money to see someone talking. Since I could not find any reviews of the course in any format, I thought I might be helpful to potential buyers of any format.

Prof. Greenberg is a character. When I first began to listen and heard his vocal improvisations and humor I thought, "uh-oh". But, I found that his light-hearted style is just the ticket for this comprehensive tour through Western music. His continual use of the phrase "my friends" is endearing, as are his asides on personal preferences. No one will ever call this course dull and dry.

For effective teaching, one has to be enthusiastic and informed on the subject. Enthusiasm bursts from Prof. Greenberg at every turn. He is just bursting to relate all sorts of information about his love, music. But this doesn't mean he is casual and sloppy. He reiterates his subject headings - to be sure you are aware of why he is going into detail and how each topic relates to others.

History, both of individuals and cultures is central to his over-riding theme - that music is a mirror of culture. There can be no understanding of music without a basic knowledge of the time and circumstances within which it was written, but you won't get boring history lessons.

Giving voice to written accounts of a composer or performance that have been left to us, Greenberg brings personalities to life in often hilarious readings that help us realize that, though times may change, human envy, pride, anxiety and lust do not. You couldn't ask for a more varied cast of characters than we hear from during this course. You'll realize that music is in no way removed from life but a product of intimacy between the composer his personal experience and his times.

Prof. Greenberg will take to the keys of his piano to clarify musical themes, played in simplicity, unadorned by the rich orchestrations that can easily hide key musical ideas from a novice. He will mix his voice with music to announce the parts of a composition. Hear that change of key - yes! What the heck is a modulating bridge? Just listen, there it is, right there! In the next lesson, he won't forget to remind you of what you've heard about earlier.

Above all, what makes this presentation a success is Greenberg's clear desire to let you in on what means so much to him. He wants you to share his joy and he succeeds, combining his comprehensive understanding of his subject, his zany sense of humor and his sparkling imagination.

p.s.: the audio cassette rendition of some of the musical examples was not the best, with slight distortion, it never interfered with the interpretation of the music. A CD or DVD should be far superior in quality.

Transform Your Life: Yoga with Baron Baptiste Review

I have this in VHS but can't imagine there would be much different in the DVD.

I originally bought it out of curiousity but it has proven to be quite valuable to me. I have many of Baron's videos and his book so I am very familiar with his work. I find Baron to be a breath of fresh air in the yoga world in that his approach to yoga is very down to earth and practical. As he says "This is yoga for Real People".....

This video has 42 of students of all different levels of experience with yoga, some complete beginners, going thru a seven day bootcamp in Hawaii. It's very inspirational to see them go thru not only the intense yoga practice but how they respond to the diet (including a fruit only detoxifying diet for a couple of days).

I have read Baron's book "Journey Into Power" several times already and continue to read it still. The section on the cleansing diet was particularly fascinating to me. Somehow watching the students on the tape go thru that diet made it seem more approachable to me and I have since modified my diet more along the lines of the books recommendations.

I noticed immediate benefits and have been able to break a plateau weightwise not to mention that I just feel better overall (and I am a person who had a pretty clean vegetarian diet for about 15 years and have been doing yoga seriously (daily in fact) for the last 6 years. This video really provides additional inspiration to help implement what I've learned from Baron's book.

This is not a teaching video per say, more of a mini-documentary of one of his bootcamps (though there is a wonderful "Power Yoga Basics" 20 minute instructional routine at the end which is a nice addition and worth the price of the entire tape).

Also it's wonderful to watch how the combined practices of asana, diet and meditation (plus group discussions)really impact on the students lives in a very real and deep way in such a short period of time. I hope someday I'll have the opportunity to do one of his bootcamps myself:)

Baron truly has an approach to teaching yoga in a way that is incredibly relevant to modern folks. It's just as deep as more traditional practices but it's put in language that speaks directly to folks who want the transformative power of yoga without the eastern trappings. As he says, the power is in the process!

When I was a little kid, I used to dream of a world teeming with dinosaurs. I used to imagine what it would have been like when those skeletons I saw on exhibit lived, and how someone needed to play tour guide to that realm and how I should twist the handle. Sadly, no matter how I tried that doorway, it always remained closed, my time machine not quite working the way I would have intended, and dinosaurs were left either in bone formation or in the movies as monsters.
There was never an in-between. With the creation of the Walking With Dinosaurs series, however, everything began to change and I, still that boy with an interest in that hobby, found myself addicted. The key that separated this series and made it "unique" - a word I try to use sparingly - is in the way the dinosaurs, our main actors and actresses, are portrayed. Instead of turning then into a depiction of a colossal, toothy menace or dryly discussing their lifespan in the way one discusses ancient relics, the series showcases dinosaurs by allowing one to walk with them through their terrain. From the flora and the fauna, the insect life and dinosaurs themselves, a depiction of CGI effects, prosthetics, and of "dinosaur knowing" comes to life. Here, you see the landscape the way it would have been, the animals roaming free and observed naturalistically, and the experience is incredible because it looks so vibrantly realistic. In Allosaurus: A Walking With Dinosaurs Special, the Allosaurus "Big Al" is showcased as he struggles from the cradle while trying to grow into something fearsome. In sixty minutes, the fifteen years from the egg to the eventual demise it faces are depicted, showing a person that going to the head of the class wasn't easy in that age. Here, other dinosaurs walk as well, and the efforts of one of the top predators of its age seem a tad on the hard side - making me rethink the allure of being the biggest kid on the block. Survival while growing, it is dramatic and enlightening experience, and its pretty interesting how harrowing an introduction can be and how brutal it can be. For anyone that has yet to watch this series, I'd recommend tuning in as soon as possible and catching up on all those moments you missed out on. I would recommend starting with Walking With Dinosaurs, however, and moving on from there. Still, that is far from being a bad thing. Besides this video that focuses on Big Al and a few of species, other DVDs house other forms of life that are entrancing. Wonderfully fast predators, Megladons swimming the high tides and eating enough to be interesting, and other strange species await you.
