His Bodyguard [VHS] Review

A really good movie that I've watched over and over until my DVR crashed. I'd love to buy it or even record it again but it is nowhere to be found. Given the price the tape goes for, I don't understand why this movie hadn't been digitalized and sold on DVD.

It's a good love story but better than that it is a story about two people who need to find who they really are.

Gangstresses Review

This was the first Harry Davis film I had ever seen and it was just great. I especially enjoyed Shaka Don, she is the mosy genuine in my eyes. I really liked that the women got something from them either selling drugs, or their ass. Its a shame that us women have to do those things. Atleast Champagne got a nice house, even if it was doing that. She is still maintaining with her young daughter. Some women do that and forget about their children. I recommend this film to everyone. I applaud Harry Davis & Associates for their insights and await another original project.

Finally, an entertaining travel guide!!! Not only did this DVD thoroughly help me plan my family reunion/trip to San Francisco, but I ended up buying another copy for my parents as a souvenir AFTER the reunion as well, so they could have a special DVD memento of the city they grew up in. And of course, they absolutely loved it. The camera-work of this film is brilliant! I was so impressed by the amazing shots, incredible color, and such a great original score. This DVD really makes San Francisco come alive right before your eyes. Also, there is a special bonus slide-show near the end that shows unbelievably powerful photos of the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. It is really something to marvel at how this city has not only stood the test of time through such catastrophe, but has become an even more amazing and inspiring U.S. city.

Beethoven was a revolutionary man living in a revolutionary time. He captured his inner voice-demons and all-and the spirit of his time, and in doing so, created a body of music the likes of which no one had ever before imagined. "An artist must never stand still," he once said. A virtuoso at the keyboard, Beethoven used the piano as his personal musical laboratory, and the piano sonata became, more than any other genre of music, a place where he could experiment with harmony, motivic development, the contextual use of form, and, most important, his developing view of music as a self-expressive art. Pushing the Piano to Its Limit and Beyond Spanning the length of his compositional career, Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas provide a window into his personal musical development, and they show the concept of the piano as an instrument and the piano sonata as a genre undergoing an extraordinary evolution. The sonatas are not simply compositions for the piano, but are about the developing technology of the piano itself, an evolving instrument that Beethoven pushed to its limits and then beyond, ultimately writing music for an idealized piano that didn't come into existence until some 40 years after his death.

Greenberg is one of the all-time greatest lecturers, he will have you on the floor laughing. You get savory bits from Beethoven's life (why did Beethoven try to hit his most loyal patron over the head with a chair?) and the historical time period along with some of the most beautiful music ever written played by one of the world's best pianists, Claude Frank. Greenberg is such a great explainer that if you know nothing about music you will come away with a better understanding of theory concepts in addition to being introduced or re-introduced to both the familiar and the unfamiliar among Beethoven's sonatas. For example, he explains that a "key" is a set of relationships and an expectation as to a particular resolution. You don't know you're in the "key of C" until you hear something that leads you to conclude that the "C" triad chord is the tonic (i.e., expected end or resolution point) of the piece or section of the piece, like a cadence starting out from the dominant. Highly recommended, as are his lectures on the string quartets.

Although my taste in documentary is in the French communist style of Chris Marker, the void in visual rhetoric on this particular topic makes this film/video an original, urgent and lucid filmic account of one of the most important and overlooked periods of organized revolutionary struggle in this country. This moment was the first time police arrested and beat student organizers, the first violent student of color demonstration, and the first time a governor (Ray-gun) called the National Guard on a college campus. That students continue to evoke the TWLF every ten years on the campus, and more significantly, that the 1999 Third World Strike accomplished so much while defending neoliberal downsizing attacks on Ethnic Studies makes this film so very important for activist polemics and instruction. I saw this film at the 2010 Decolonizing the University conference in Berkeley. Open it up or Shut it Down! Unidos Venceremos! Long Live the Third World Liberation Front!
