The Irish R.M. - Series 3 Review

The Irish R.M. is a wonderfully entertaining series that originally ran on the PBS "Masterpiece Theatre" program with the exception of the final six episodes that concluded the series. For the legions of viewers who delighted in the adventures and misadventures of their favorite Registered Magistrate and the Irish community of Skebawn he served, that omission is now addressed through the six-video boxed set now available from Acorn Media. Each episode runs 54 minutes and brings back all our favorite characters, with the exception of the Major's wife who is back in England tending to a sick relative. Her place in this third season is taken by the introduction of the Major's sister to his household. Beautiful landscapes, wonderful interior sets, meticulous attention to authenticity with respect to costuming, engagingly funny plots, The Irish R.M. is one of the best written, directed, photographed, and enacted comedies television ever offered the viewing public. Of special note is the final episode when the denizens of Skebawn are threatened with the loss of their R.M. to another position elsewhere in Ireland -- and the absolutely brilliant and unpredictable conclusion that caps off not only the best single episode of the series, but the entire and brilliant series itself! The Irish R.M. Series 1 & 2 are still available, and this outstanding series will prove to be one of the most popular acquisitions to a community library's video collection ever!

Penicillin. The airplane. Pulsars. Organ transplants. The atomic bomb. Psychoanalysis. The Model T. DNA. Volcanoes. The computer. Apollo 8. Travel to the dramatic frontier of scientific discovery and exploration as the most astonishing 100 years of science and technology dramatically unfold with the premiere of A Science Odyssey - the journey of a century. Hosted by award-winning journalist Charles Osgood, this five-part, ten-hour series explores the sweeping changes that have revolutionized life and thinking in the twentieth century.

Each two-hour episode moves chronologically through the century, blending exciting historic adventures - full of twists and turns, suspense and surprise - with the political, economic, and cultural changes that have caused or come about because of scientific discovery. Through illuminating first-hand interviews, rare historical footage, and state-of-the-art computer animations, A Science Odyssey offers a rich behind-the-science chronicle of the century's most revolutionary scientific and technological discoveries.

A Science Odyssey - The Journey of a Century (5-Pack) Review

We all hated science in school, right? Science was boring. Science was for nerds. Science was dry and dusty facts about rocks and larvae and the solar corona, which sounds kind of like a beer from the tropics.

Well, Virginia, science doesn't have to be dull, and this series is proof. "A Science Odyssey" is a superb, fascinating set of documentaries on the science *and* the humanity behind the science. It's all extremely literate, doesn't dumb-down its subject one bit, and is chock full of interesting scientists who are enthusiastic about their fields of endeavor. Yet this is science your grandmother could understand. These shows strike the perfect balance between being substantive and being accessible to the lay person.

"A Science Odyssey" ran on PBS late in 1999, and dealt with scientific learning through the 20th century, each episode starting in an appropriate 1900 location for that show's theme and ending in its modern counterpart. Rather than just deal with one narrow topic for two hours, each episode has a broad conceptual theme, and shows connections between each that are often not readily apparent: for example, "Origins" deals with, well, origins, of all sorts of things: life, continental drift, DNA, intelligence. "Bigger Better Faster" deals with everything that got bigger, better and faster in the 20th century: cars, planes, spaceships, computers, and synthetics (which are often better or at least less expensive than their natural counterparts). "Matters of Life And Death" give us a survey of advances of medicines and treatments. The shows are chock full of fascinating anecdotes: we learn about the unlikely invention of nylon, for example, something rarely discussed today, and learn about the bi-polar mind of the man who invented it, who shortly thereafter committed suicide in a fit of depression. We learn about how plate tectonics went from a screwball theory on the radical fringe to an accepted scientific explanation for earthquakes and continental formation, and how deep-sea exploration inadvertently provided the missing piece to the puzzle.

Charles Osgood hosts, and fortunately does not talk in rhyme here. The scripts are extremely well-written, the "theatrics" are kept to a minimum and the historical footage is fascinating. It all moves very quickly, appropriate for this television sound-bite age, but you come away smarter after each one. This should not be out of print. In fact, it should be on DVD, but I'm not holding my breath. These shows were made for the millenium, and are probably considered too "dated" to be of interest today.

(P.S. 10/20/05: I'm happy to report I was wrong about my prediction--PBS has finally put these on DVD! [It's about time. What's the matter, PBS, did you run out of cooking videos and Andre Rieu?] WARNING: do not try to buy these DVDs separately, even from people who claim to have the episode "Origins" in stock. For some reason I could not individually order that one title from anyone, even those who claimed to be able to ship it in 1-2 days. Distributors are currently out of this episode--even PBS itself has no more copies. I finally had to, after ordering the other four episodes separately, order the entire box and sell off the redundant DVDs in the set, all to get "Origins" on DVD. Worth it, but a pain.

Also, a note if you do get these on DVD: For some unimaginable reason [other than stupidity], if you choose "Play" from the menu, THE DISCS DO NOT START AT THE BEGINNING. They start either after the Prologue, or after the Prologue and Introduction depending on the disk. You thus miss the whole "set up" of each episode, the central question or issue. So instead of pressing "Play" in the root menu, go into the chapter selections and start with the first chapter, "Prologue.")

Gilmore Girls: The Complete Series season 1-7 /DVD [DVD] Review

I want to preface this review by saying this: I envy each and every person that will forever be able to pick up this set and experience the magic, whimsy, and zanyness of the Gilmore Girls fresh and anew for the first time.

`Gilmore Girls' which ran from 2001-2007 on the WB and CW networks is a show that is simply about a mother and daughter. But it goes so much further than that. This particular mother/daughter combo are best friends and separated in age by a mere 16 years. Yet, more than the interactions between Lorelai and her daughter Rory, typically the zany towns-people are the characters that steal the show. Their incredibly charm, matched with `the Gilmore Girls' wit, all set within the picture-perfect New England town of Stars Hollow, makes "Gilmore Girls" seem almost like a story book fantasy.

The series begins with Lorelai reluctantly starting to rebuild her relationship with her waspy high-society parents, after they agree to fund Rory's private school education. Throughout the seven seasons the audience watches as Lorelai relationship with her parents start to blossom, as well as the bond that forever strengthens between her and her own daughter, Rory. Lorelai was raised as a princess, but always hated her parents for the rules that society put upon her - hence why she ran away from home when she was 16 and pregnant. Throughout the years as well, the audience watches as Rory grows from an innocent and na ve 15-year-old girl, into a mature and seasoned 22-year-old college graduate.

It's impossible to put into words just how magical this show really is. And it is not the perpetual `chick-flick' that many write-it off as. It is infact probably one of the smartest and best written television shows to grace the small-screen in recent years. One would need several PH D.s in Popular Culture to get even 80% of the refrences that these girls throw around. And beyond that the performances of the actors makes this show something special. And, although the show started as a drama, the humor was always present and by the middle of season one the glimpses of the great comedy to come started to make themselves known.

My review my sound like a very proud grand-parent raving about their grandchild, but that shows the love I have for this magical series. I watched from the very first episode at 14 years-old with my best friend until the series finale in my apartment during my sophomore year of college (with the same friend by my side, traveling 700 miles so we could watch it together). I have loved every moment, and will buy this set in a heartbeat.

This DVD set includes all 153 episodes on 42 DVDs in their original full-frame broadcast video with Dolby Surround Sound. Special Features include a "Welcome to the Gilmore Girls" documentary, deleted scenes from select episodes, pop-culture montages, a `gilmoreism' book, commentary on "I Jump, you Jump Jack" by series creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, as well as several `behind-the-scenes' featurettes.

The Race for the Double Helix [VHS] Review

To respond to the unnamed reviewed from May of this year, the reason why Double Helix isn't availible on DVD or even VHS is because a few years after it's release, the company that produced the movie realized that it was being used in many biology classrooms as an educational video. Knowing that they could get a lot more money if they moved the movie from regular mass production into specialized educational sales, they pulled it off the shelves and did just that. The video is now availible in science educator's catalogues - at a price north of $150.

Violin Lessons - AMP - Beginner Violin Lessons on DVD with Music Book Written for a Learning Violinist and Fingering Charts, 100% Satisfaction Guarantee 152 Review

Trust me, if you want to learn violin, get this DVD series!
To be honest, I had my doubts, because I spent time and money on useless books and DVDs (like ABC's of violin) and learned nothing. But after I researched Mrs. Seidel violin teaching methods and visited her website, videoviolinlessons.com (check it out, it's great!), I felt comfortable enough to try her DVD series. I noticed the difference right away, because I was able to e-mail Mrs. Seidel on all of my questions,..and she actually e-mailed me back with a real answer (amazing this day and age), and the DVD lessons are extremely helpful, with well organized DVD menus, crystal clear picture and sound, two different camera angles side by side (full image, and close up of the fingering hand) and the music on screen at the same time! No more, looking back and forth from fumbling with the sheet music and trying to follow the DVD, the way Mrs. Seidel professionally arranged the on screen lessons is BRILLANT! I for one am a true believer in learning violin from a DVD series, and I definitely will purchase the other DVD series.
