The Ghoul Review

For those of you familiar with the 1933 film starring Boris Karloff (and if you're not then you should be), this 1975 film is not a remake of that movie but rather a reworking of Hammer's 1966 title THE REPTILE. Unlike that film which is a classic within its genre, this film doesn't quite measure up but it's still worthwhile for fans of Hammer style horror movies. Peter Cushing stars as a clergyman living in Cornwall who has lost his faith because of what happened to his son in India. What exactly happened is never explained but it leaves the son, who we don't see until the very end, with a craving for human flesh. The son is cared for by a Indian servant who may be responsible for what occured. She prepares his "meals" at any rate. A young John Hurt co-stars as a disturbed World War I soldier who is Peter Cushing's gardener. He procures the "ingredients" for the servant to prepare. This last bit is a reference to the 1963 American cult favorite BLOOD FEAST.

The film opens in a 1920s GREAT GATSBY like setting. Dixieland Jazz plays, people dance and party, and two girls Daphne (Veronica Carlson) and Angela (Alexandra Bastedo) goad their boyfriends into having an impromptu auto race. When Carlson's car runs out of gas, she's abducted by Hurt and taken to Cushing's estate where we meet the strange Indian servant. Hurt dispatches the boy friend while Carlson is left to her fate. When the second car arrives, it breaks down leaving the second couple there. Will they escape? There is nothing new or original in THE GHOUL but the sets and the cinematography are first rate as is Cushing. The photo of the wife he shows off was his real life Helen whose death led Cushing to a sabbatical in the early 1970s. Like its companion piece LEGEND OF THE WEREWOLF, GHOUL gets off to a slow start but then things pick up and keep on going until right before the very end which I didn't much care for. Others might.
