Lion of Africa [VHS] Review

Gods Must Be Crazy, Out Of Africa, or Hatari, it ain't. What it is, instead, is a good and fun adventure in Kenya. Brian Denehey is terrific as the stubborn-old-coot-safari-guy. It has moments of charm and wild abandon. The cinematography is excellent. You'll love just watching the African scenery go by. The story leaves something to be desired. But, on the whole, it's a pretty good movie.

On June 14th, 1985 TWA flight 847 left Athens with 145 passengers and 8 crew members. Enroute to Rome, 2 armed terrorists seized the airliner and ordered it to Beirut, where it began a 2 day journey flying repeatedly between Lebanon and Algiers. During the ordeal, an American life was lost. This film portrays the first 2 days of the hijacking, focusing on the lead flight attendant's heroism in preventing further tragedy.

The Flight (The Taking of Flight 847: The Uli Derickson Story) [VHS] (1988) Review

I think this is Lindsay Wagner's finest performance. This film, known also as "The Taking of Flight 847: The Uli Derickson Story", describes the first two days of the TWA hijacking from 1985. The focus is on the heroic actions of the chief flight attendant, who Wagner plays in the movie. The performances in this film, particularly by those playing the hijackers and the crew members are first-rate. While this is not a complete look at the whole hijacking, this film examines what happened while a majority of the passengers were on board before the plane was emptied in Beirut 2 days into the hijacking. This film deserves a five-star rating because of its accuracy, its quality, and the cast's performance. It's probably the best made-for-TV movie I've seen. I highly recommend this film.

Karaoke Party Essentials (Karaoke DVD) Review

This is our 5th DVD with Karoake for parties - we like to project the image from a DVD player hooked up to a proxima onto a screen at pool parties and then hook up wireless microphones to feature singers as well as allow everyone at the party to sing along. This has great sound quality - the advantage of DVD over a traditional karoake machine is the sound and picture - as you can use your existing sound system. We also play these in the house on the DVD for family get-togethers, most commonly we don't use a microphone when in the house but all just sing along. This quality is one of the better DVDs we've purchased.

I stumbled across this documentary on Netflix and I'm really glad I gave it a try. It was incredibly interesting to hear about the design of the super highway and how there are curves and changes in elevation to keep driver's alert. It's amazing to think that a highway that has many sections with absolutely no maximum speed limit that it's one fo the safest in the world. In fact, you are ticketed for driving too slow. There is a price for speed, however. A German driver's license costs between $1500 and $2000 US dollars. The one thing that police officers focus on is aggressive driving. There are cops stationed along the highway and video cameras placed inconspicuously along the highway to ticket drivers who tailgate, yell at another driver($500 minimum fine), cut someone off, or make frequent hazardous lane changes. Ticket fines are based on a sliding scale of wealth. The more you earn, the higher the ticket. There was a report of a wealthy driver who received a ticket in the amount of $21,000 US dollar equivalent for tailgating. You will learn that German drivers take their driving seriously, as you must, driving at such high rates of speed. Therefore, there is no need for cup holders or mirrors on the visor. German drivers are too busy concentrating to eat or drink, put on make-up or talk on their cell phones while driving. That, in itself reduces fatalities.
Hitler did many horrendous things during his reign over the Nazi party, but one thing he did to help Germany boost it's economy was to begin work on his dream of the autobahn. When Eisenhower returned from WWII, it was his suggestion that the US begin work on an interstate system.
A great documentary, well worth a watch!

Phantasm Sphere: The Complete Collection [Region 2] Review

So, for about EVER, I wanted all the Phantasms on DVD, but not in this country of ours! So, ages ago, has been over 3.5 years, I bought the silver ball box set from the Anchor Bay UK Website, ([...]), and with a regionless dvd player, I got to enjoy all the films in clean, crisp letterbox! It's in Region 2...UK. The ones selling here, used, are like mine. They're gorgeous and clean. For years, I only had VHS copies, and they looked horrific. This release is in original letterbox ratio, enhanced for 16X9 TVs.

I think I paid like 80-90 bucks for the box set and the ball, but apparently, its no longer in print if it's going for 125 now, used. Still is worth it, though. I can assume, with almost certainty, that America will never see this type of box set in a silver ball package. Anchor Bay is good about their releases, and if it didn't enter our market after all this time, I am beginning to wonder if we'll see Phantasm 2 in the US on DVD. Somebody must be holding everything up with copyright.

Anchor Bay is pretty awesome, I think. Some don't think as I, but everybody can't be happy at once.
