Defendor [Blu-ray] Review

While marketed as a comedy, Defendor is actually a dark and touching crime drama. But while you can't expect Woody's comedy antics a la Zombieland, expect one of the best performances of his career.

By day, Arthur Poppington is a construction worker with a below-average IQ. By night, he's Defendor, dishing out justice with makeshift weapons (reminding us in his gruff Batman voice that "guns are for cowards"). But while the movie starts out light and funny, it evolves into something both dark and sad. With the flood of recent superhero movies, Defendor reminds us that reality isn't always so super.

The real story here is the unlikely friendship between Defendor and a drug-addicted prostitute, in his ongoing mission to take down Captain Industry. Woody is terrific in the role, bouncing between his wacky self and a vulnerable man-child who still believes in justice.

For this being his first directing gig, Peter Stebbings hits a bullseye. There's great cinematography and lighting, and Stebbings playfully throws out a few superhero flick cliches. John Rowley serves up one of the best movie scores I've heard in a while, with a powerful and dark superhero soundtrack. The supporting cast is also top-notch, from Elias Koteas and Sandra Oh to Clark Johnson (The Wire/Homicide).

You will enjoy this movie if you go into it with the understanding that it's not a comedy. It's a dark drama with splashes of humor and violence, and a very powerful ending.

Vladimir Horowitz - The Last Romantic Review

In 1983, Vladimir Horowitz retired from the concert stage following a series of disastrous recitals. Rumors about his health from Alzheimer's disease to cancer swept through the music world, and it was generally felt that he would never play again. As it turned out, Horowitz had been taking anti-depressant medication which impaired his memory and coordination. Once the cause of his problems was revealed, he stopped taking the medication cold-turkey and, after battling the trials of withdrawal, eventually returned to normal. Early in 1985, Horowitz told his manager, Peter Gelb, that he wanted to resume musical activity, but didn't yet feel up to the task of public recitals. The documentary contained on this DVD was Horowitz' way of easing into the rigors of concertizing.This film shows Horowitz trying out pianos in Steinway's famous basement, discussing his life, and performing in his elegantly appointed New York townhouse. Wanda Toscanini Horowitz is ever present, recalling how she lived under the shadow of famous musicians (her father was Artuto Toscanini)and encouraging her husband in his reaquaintance with the piano.Horowitz, 81 years young at the time, plays very well here--although his performance is not quite on the same level it would be one year later at his legendary Moscow recital (also available on DVD). The Bach-Busoni Chorale, Mozart Sonata, and Schumann Novelette reveal the playing of a grand master in sovereign command of his resources. It must be admited however, some of the more bravura pieces do not match his best playing from earlier years. At one point, Wanda scolds him for neglecting to practice the Schumann Novelette. Horowitz reluctantly waddles to the piano, tries a few passages, and it's obvious his memory of the piece is sketchy. After reading the piece from the printed music, he plays the Novelette as if he has known it his entire life!The hand held camera work is often too close and shaky--ala Blair Witch Project--and becomes a distraction at times. In a reversal of the norm, the DVD transfer is visually not quite up to the level of my LaserDisc, but is an improvement over the VHS version. Portions of the image look compressed and grainy. No complaints about the sound. The sonic image is clean and well focused, the dynamic range spectacular.This is a must for all Horowitz fans and those who miss the Golden Age of Pianism. Friday Night Lights: Seasons 1-4 Review

I have to admit, whenever I think of this show I think of life back in 2006 when it premiered. I was at a pivotal time in my life. This show was a breath of fresh air and it often reminds me of the girlfriend I had at the time as she loved this show as well. Being that she lived in North Carolina and I in Atlanta, we both would watch the show every Friday and then go out and party in our respective cities. We would text each other all night and weekend about the show and what was funny and what hit home the most. Being that we're not together now, I often think of her when the show comes on and she's communicated the same about me. In watching these episodes, it reminds me of that time with her.

This was a wonderful show. I am very disappointed it ended and not many people took to it. I can't say one bad thing about this show and how it was written / filmed. Hands down this show was one of the best series ever made.

Season 2 was more of a hiccup due to the Writer's strike, as all the shows were never completed.

The first 3 seasons chronicles the lives of Jason, Tim, Smash, Lyla, Matt, Landry and Tyra (along with Coach Taylor and his family). With Season 4 and 5 it chronicles new characters Vince, Luke, Becky and Jess. Season 5 was more heartwrenching. What more can I say about this show. It was just great. I have an empty feeling now that it is over with and there is no more anticipation for what else is to come. You want the best for every character and when something bad happens it almost hit home as you can relate to their struggles.

I've made it a point to share and tell everyone about this show who wants to hear about it. It's one of the best and I wish all the people and actors associated with it the best in their future endeavors. If you haven't watched this.. Please start with Season 1 episode 1.. and enjoy the journey as I have. I hope this will help you choose to watch 76 hours of one of the best shows that ever graced television.

Saiyuki Reload - Complete Boxed Set Review

The art style and animation quality (smoothness of action, etc.) are definitely better in Saiyuki Reload than they were in Saiyuki.

The Japanese voice actors are the same for both Saiyuki and Saiyuki Reload, and they're awesome in both.

Unfortunately, as another reviewer pointed out, most of the episodes in Saiyuki Reload are fluffy filler episodes. The bath house (onsen) episode (episode 10) is terribly cute and funny, though, and Saiyuki Reload does cover the Kami-sama arc (episodes 17 through 25), which is very serious and pretty pivotal to the series.

The Urasai (behind-the-scenes clips) are funny too, and they come at the end of each episode.

If you like the Saiyuki series, you should at least grab the Kami-sama epsiodes from Saiyuki Reload (episodes 17 through 25, discs 5 through 7).
