Product Description

This luminous, visionary opera tells the story of how Mahatma Gandhi developed the philosophy of satyagraha, nonviolent active resistance, as a political revolutionary tool to fight oppression, connecting his lifework to three historical figures who advanced his philosophy: the celebrated Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, the great Indian poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore and the heroic American civil rights leader Martin Luther King. The libretto is comprised of passages from "The Bhagavad-Gita," India's greatest philosophical epic, and perfectly complements Glass' ravishing score, mysteriously transporting the audience with a serene power and an all-encompassing sense of peace. Recorded live from the Wurttembergishches Staatstheater Stuttgart, Grosses Haus. 148 minutes. Cast:

Leo Goeke: Ghandi I
Ralf Harster: Ghandi II
Helmut Danninger: Ghandi III
Inga Nielsen: Schlesen, Ghandi's secretary
Elke Estlinbaum: Kasturbai, Ghandi's wife
Wolfgang Probst: Kallenbach I, European aide
Kimmo Lappalainen: Kallenbach II, European aide
Daniel Bonilla: Parsi Rustonji, Indian aide
Melinda Liebermann: Naidoo, Indian aide
Dennis Russell Davis: conductor
Achin Freyer: sets and costumes

Philip Glass - Satyagraha / Davis, Goeke, Harster, Danninger Review

This DVD has already been released in Europe by Arthaus and it's very disappointing. It appears to be sourced from a video of a 1983 ZDF/C4 television co-production. The picture for the most part is passable, but the image is soft and unfocussed, dark backgrounds are grainy and colours are washed-out. Lights flare and trails of light are visible whenever white objects move around.
This television recording does not capture the event very well and fails to live up to still photographs I have seen of the Stuttgart production. It tries to capture as much of the production as possible by using frequent long shots, but the poor definition of the video means that all we can see under the bright stage lights are a blur where the performers should be.The music is PCM stereo, but this is rendered meaningless because of the poor quality of the source. The performance of the orchestra itself seems fine, although to be honest it is hard to tell because of the poor mix. There appears to be no stereo separation that I could make out and music and instruments dip in and out of the mix. A deep bass organ appears at intervals throughout the performance to fill in parts that the string section could not play, since there are very few breaks for them in the performance. It does not blend very well in this mix. There is also quite a bit of stage noise due to the use of so many props and there being so much activity going on during the performance.
The performance of the singers however is clearly excellent. Considering they have to sing long scenes in Sanskrit and have to perform in difficult circumstances - sometimes suspended from wires, the singing is strong and comes across very well.I couldn't recommend this disk to anyone who is not already familiar with the opera. However since the Stuttgart production itself is so unique and this TV recording is probably the only source available, the DVD has some value as a document of a rare production of the opera. Inquisition Review

When I purchased this DVD, I was wondering if it would be similar to "Mark of the Devil", another 'torture' movie. To my satisfaction, it was better. The plot of the movie was more interesting; the story keeps you 'glued' to the screen. This gutt-filled movie is so realistic with devices and schemes to torture the condemned. This movie is filled with suspense! (NOTE: nudity and torture involved). Definitely NOT suitable for the squeamish or under-aged. Hope you will enjoy this movie, it will make it well worth your purchase. Enjoy! Movie Critic-

Product Description

Hot Rods Roadrunners, Drag Racers, is a 4 Classic Films on DVD. Ingenuity in Action (Part I) (1958)-Made for hot rod fans; explains how to prepare and enter a car show; also serves as an ethnographic account of the "nomadic tribe of hotrodders". This is an awesome film!! It's got it all. Cool cats, beautiful cars, wonderful scenery and lots of drag strip action. It even has a guy with a beatnik beard! Ingenuity in Action (Part II) (1958)-Excellent hot rod footage. Also, very good scenes of trophies awarded to winners of drag race. Excellent color. This is probably one of the best films dealing with hotrods and drag racing. Voice-over by a somewhat macho racecar driver and enthusiast. Road Runners (ca. 1952)-Outlaw hotrodders become law-abiding gear heads after a community organizes supervised racing clubs and timing associations. Ken Smith notes: "Mel" is a hot-rodder who quickly conforms when he discovers the Santa Ana drag strip and the Lake El Mirage timing trials. These provide a "safe and constructive outlet," the narrator tells us, and help mitigate the "juvenile nuisance problem." "Trophies now instead of traffic tickets! He'll never speed on the highway again!" Real life wasn't really this shots of homemade hot rods and seat belts. A Cool Hotrod (1953)-Uses narration by a teen-ager to show how a hot-rod club contributes to safe driving through its strict membership rules and restriction of speed runs to 'DRAG STRIPS.'.

Hot Rods, Road Runners, Drag Racing, Street Rods, NHRA Classic 50's Film Collection Review

I'm a big dragrace hotrod fan. I gave it 5 stars because it was good.
I just wish the cover listed the titles of the short movies.
Some of the classic DVD's have the same shows on them.

Night on Earth Review

There isn't much going on in Jim Jarmusch film, but there's a lot happening beneath the surface. Even more than he is a terrific filmmaker and a wonderful screenwriter, Jarmusch is a great observer of human nature. Even though 'Dead Man' and 'Ghost Dog' are the films that gave him more widespread commercial success, these are not typical of his style; Jarmusch's early film hardly have any plot at all, and all they give us is fragments of human lives. His approach towards his characters is always very up-close and personal, but never first-person; the viewer is always an observant, sometimes as comfortable as a close friend, sometimes too close for comfort, almost a voyeur. And yet, with his incredible insight into the human soul and what makes it tick, Jarmusch makes every one of his characters come to full life - even though there are no internal monologues, no revealing close-ups; Jarmusch creates his characters solely through their behavior; and he understands people so well, that in doing so he completely transcends the boundaries of language, culture and nationality.

Like Jarmusch's previous film, 'Mystery Train', 'Night On Earth' gives us several different stories about different characters from different backgrounds. This time, though, there is not the slightest connection between the stories, except a thematic one: we are shown five stories taking place in taxi cabs in five different major cities around the world.

The first story takes place in Los Angeles, and in it is a twenty year old (but she looks seventeen at most!) Winona Ryder, fresh from her break in Beetle Juice and Edward Scissorhands, who plays a young, perky, smart-ass, chain-smoking taxi driver and gives one of the most brilliant performances of her career; opposite her is another terrific actress, Gena Rowlands, as an uptight, busy Hollywood agent.

In the second story, taking place in New York, black Brooklyn native YoYo (Giancarlo Esposito) has a hard time getting a cab in Manhattan, and is finally picked up by Helmut, clown-turned-taxi driver, Eastern German immigrant on his first day at the job (and his first day on an automatic, as well).

The third story is located in Paris, in which Isaac De Bankole (the unforgettable Raymond the ice cream man from 'Ghost Dog') plays a taxi driver who's having a bad day, as he picks up a blind woman (Beatrice Dalle) who doesn't make him feel much better.

The fourth story, taking place in Rome, is practically full-out Italian comedy, with Jarmusch's old friend Roberto Benigni plays a bizarre taxi driver who's giving a bishop (or is he?) a hard time for his money.

Finally, in the fifth story, located in Helsinki, the wonderful Matti Pellonpaa plays Mika, a cheery yet melancholy driver, who picks up three young drunkards and shows to them the true nature of pain.

Each one of these stories has a very distinct and unique atmosphere, ranging from comedy to drama, and revealing, often, the different mentalities of the different countries; the humanity, though, runs all the way through. All of Jarmusch's characters are different and yet the same; they are all equally human, and he understands them all, but each one on their own terms. Jarmusch's observation is always brutally frank and sincere, and always loving and forgiving, for all of his characters equally. Night On Earth is sometimes sad, often funny, mostly touching and always beautiful. There may not be much going on, but it never fails to fascinate.
