The Church: Goldfish (Jokes, Magic and Souvenirs) Review

Last month I was lucky enough to stumble across this DVD in a music shop. I had always wondered if the Church had ever released a compilation of their video clips, but had never been able to find one. It turns out this compilation was originally released on video in 1990. The DVD includes two bonus tracks: "Ripple" (1992) and "Two Places At Once" (1994).

As well as seeing the clips (beginning with "The Unguarded Moment") we also see home video footage of the Church "being themselves": travelling through different cities, making faces and funny noises at the camera, playing pool, shooting a clip. That part where they're tentatively examining the food reminds me of that scene from "This Is Spinal Tap", where a band member complains about the size of the bread.

It's hard to believe how much time has passed since these clips were made. I recently saw an interview with Steve Kilbey, where he talked about the making of the clip to "Columbus", and how embarassing it was. They made this clip in America, the band standing on the back of a moving truck with a police motorcycle escort. According to Kilbey one onlooker yelled out "Hey, who are you guys? Hey, Myrtle, who are those guys?" Well, it wasn't until the release of "Under the Milky Way" in 1988 that the Church really gained fame in America.

Most of the clips on this DVD I had not seen before, the exceptions being "The Unguarded Moment", "A Different Man", "Electric Lash", "Almost With You", "Under the Milky Way" and "Metropolis". This is a great collection by one of Australia's most enduring rock bands. A must-buy.

Pushing Hands Review

Watched twice, still as powerful as the first time since I watched it years ago. It is a story about a Tai Chi master from Taiwan and living with his American daughter in Law who doesn't speak any Chinese except "Thank you". As the time goes on, the film portrayed 3 generations in this family: the son, the father, the American wife and the American born boy. Not only the communication creates a huge gap between each generation; also each one of them lives a life with different characters. At one scene when the father telling his son that he is no longer valuable considered by the society and his life is going no where; the son also told him that throughout his life he is trying to put everyone's life together with houses, more money, and jobs rather than finding out the true meaning for the family and the bond each one hold for the other. The film shows how each one explored their own worthiness and how it has impact other people within the family. Superb acting makes the film very real and touching. Indeed a film that is true to life and true to our hearts.

The Vampire Diaries: The Complete First Season (Limited Edition with Exclusive Q&A Bonus Disc) [Blu-ray] Review

I've never seen/read Twilight nor did I know that the Vampire Diaries was based on a series of tween books. I, generally, try to stay away from those kind of "kid" versions (I'm more the Tru Blood type). Anyway, I decided to give V Diaries a shot and I'm so glad I did.

Vampire Diaries is a guilty pleasure. Despite the fact that the series is set-up with the high school crowd, it definitely has a more adult feel to it with the complex issues that come up and the dark, edgy violence. The first couple of eps played a bit too 90210(ish) but then the series really took off.

The main characters are well rounded and believable even in unbelievable situations. The series has managed to weave a set of relationships that breath life into each of the characters. Elena is the high school girl who must not only face personal tragedy but a new boyfriend (Stephan) that may or may not be what he seems. And Stephan has his own family issues with his bad boy brother, Damon. And while Damon is definitely bad (body count anyone?)he has reasons he believes are valid for the pain he inflicts.(mostly)

Elena as played by Nina Dobrev is a smart girl with a compassionate heart who definitely doesn't put up with any BS. In this vampire tale she doesn't just automatically tell Stephan it's all right when she finds out his secret. It's not cool that he's a vampire. People die around him and that's not ok. They fall in love despite his being a vampire rather than because of it.

Stephan Salvatore, Mystic Falls resident brooding vampire, started out (to me) a little too much like an Angel wannabe but Paul Wesley has done a competent job in opening the character up. What he does to Damon in the basement was truly chilling. I was like, HEY!, aren't you supposed to be the good guy!

And last but not least of the lead characters, Damon. What can I say. Damon is just delightfully bad. Ian Somerhalder plays him with relish. In the wrong hands, his character could have easily become a cliche but the actor has turned him into someone you just can't help but feel for (equal parts sympathy and revulsion)as he struts his way around, doling out cruelty with a smile, all the while hiding a secret of his own.

The supporting cast is also just wonderful in their roles. Kudos especially to Candice Accola for her portrayal of Caroline Forbes. The whole cast was well chosen and that they're all beautiful and sexy doesn't hurt either.

Anyway, before this review becomes a novel... just watch a few eps. I dare you not to get hooked on it.

Great Old Amusement Parks Review

Boy, whenever I'm feeling down or winter has got me snowed in, I can pop in this video and enjoy a smile. This is a wonderful 60 minute video that features early amusement park footage and many wonderful theme parks many of which are still in operation today. It's done in a narrative with scenes of rides (the main focus is on rollercoasters) and it visits such parks as Kennywood, Whalom Park of Massachusetts, Coney Island, Santa Land, Cedar Point and Lake Compounce in Bristol CT.

Very interesting stuff about the rollercoasters and some rides like the whip that are not really around anymore. I found myself remembering going to amusement parks as a child and this video really takes you back. For me as a kid, it was Rocky Point in Warwick, RI. Adults and kids will really like this video.
