SAMBO SUBMISSION FIGHTING, COMPLETE 10 DVD BOXED SET, Starring Russian Master Vladislav Koulikov. Over 10 Hours Professional Fight Instruction! Review

Make no mistake, this DVD set is jam packed with moves. More than you'll probably ever learn. Koulikov gives some decent instruction, but it's of the encyclopedic sort. If you already study Sambo, Judo, Jujitsu, Wrestling or MMA then this set is worthy as such. Instruction wise Vladislav is careful to break down each move for you and show it in different angles. How to enter and exit each submission while protecting your own position is covered as well.
What really hurts this set is that the dvd's are not chaptered. You can't go directly to a particular submission to watch, and quickly replay it as you try to learn the move. It plays more like a VHS tape. There are other amateur DVD authoring/production issues as well and they have a home made quality about them. If you are buying this for the submissions, then these issues won't bother you as the video quality is pretty clear, and Koulikov gives an honest attempt at demonstrating each move fairly comprehensively.

Crusher Joe - The Movie and the OVAs Review

The good news about this set is that it contains all the Crusher Joe that's been produced: one two-hour movie and two one-hour OAV episodes. The bad news is that there's no more Crusher Joe to be had. Which is a shame for anime fans, since these four solid hours of Japanese animated space action are as well-written and beautifully animated as any comparable episodes from the Yamato, Gundam and Macross space series.

The 1983 movie (which clocks in at 2 hours and 10 minutes) introduces the Crusher Joe team, led by 19-year-old Joe, whose team of "Crushers," independent civilian contractors, do odd, often dangerous space jobs that can't be trusted to the USF (United Space Force). Joe's team consists of 17-year-old Alfin, a cute blonde; 15-year-old Ricky; and the massive 52-year-old cyborg, Talos. The sprawling plot, which takes us all over the galaxy, involves a cargo--a cryo-suspension chamber housing a female patient--that is stolen out from under Joe's nose, causing him and his crew to be suspended. To clear his name and retrieve the cargo, Joe and his team track down the space pirates behind the theft and get mixed up in internal politics on the planet where the pirates are based. The first half lets us get to know the characters, showing them interact in their downtime so we become involved in their story. The second half is almost pure explosive action and never lets up.

The 55-minute made-for-video episodes, from 1989, are "The Ice Prison" and "The Ultimate Weapon: Ash." Both focus on more concentrated sci-fi storylines and less on the characters and their interactions. The first is about an ice-filled planetoid used as a jail for political prisoners captured during trouble on planet Oro, where the populace is seeking to overthrow ruler Ghellstan. When the prison is knocked out of its orbit and starts to get pulled towards the planet, Joe and his team are called in to set things right. Unfortunately, they soon find they've been set up as part of a power ploy by the planet's dictator. "The Ultimate Weapon" has Joe and his team sent to a distant planet to rescue an army major transporting a lethal, planet-destroying weapon who's been captured by renegade officers seeking to disrupt a peace process between two warring systems. Complicating matters is the presence on the planet of Cloakers, basketball-sized killing machines left over from an abandoned secret project, which are self-replicating and target any and all humans.

Both episodes are well-written and imaginatively designed and generate intense excitement and genuine suspense. The animation, particularly in the action scenes, is just first-rate and the mecha design simply spectacular. There is combat and gunplay aplenty but nothing that would surpass a PG-13 rating. The Crusher Joe films should be better known and more celebrated among anime fans since they easily rank with the top class of Japanese animated space/sci-fi action.

Cosmic Slop [VHS] Review

The Chicago Tribune quote on the front of Cosmic Slop's box calls it "A multi-cultural Twilight Zone." That sort of sells it short. It consists of three stories. The first is about aliens which promise to solve America's major problems in exchange for it's African-American people, making an extremely deep commentary on America's attitude toward minorities. The second is about attempts by the Catholic church to suppress the multi-cultural adaptations of it's faith. The third is about the cycle of poverty and abusive behavior and how apparent solutions sometimes lead to tragic endings. There is a break between each story in which Dr. Funkenstein (George Clinton) throws his twist on them. It helps if your a PFunk fan when you're interpreting his remarks but you don't have to know the PFunk lingo to understand the rest. The stories tell it all. This video does have it's set backs. If you can't read Spanish, or don't want to, the subtitles can be a bit distracting. Also, Dr. Funkenstein's floating head, third eye and ever-changing hairdo's are a bit tacky. There aren't any surprise appearances by or concert footage of PFunk in it either. That is what I was actually hoping for when I ordered this and I recommend getting The Night Before if that's what you're looking for. Still, I'm very glad I got this and I highly recommend it. Because of the strength of it's social-political commentary, I'm giving Cosmic Slop five stars.

The Killing series 1 and 2 (Forbrydelsen) [UK import, Region 2 PAL format] Review

I saw the first season of the American version called the Killing. Soon, quite by accident, I discovered the Danish original Forbrydelsen. It took some effort, but soon I was able to watch Seasons 1 & 2. If you enjoyed the Killing, you'll be captivated by Forbrydelsen. The American version does track the original very closely, but the original is far better. I have avoided spoilers insofar as that is possible.

Sofie Grabol is compelling as the driven, dedicated Detective Sarah Lund as she investigates the grisly torture/murder of 19 year old Nanna Birk Larson. The acting is superb. The main complaint about the American version was that the murder was not solved by the end of the first season. I'll begin by saying this is not fare for reality-show types, or for those who expect to see the murder solved in 1 episode. Forbrydelsen episodes correspond to days after the killing. Episode 1 brings the viewer up to speed and makes her/him a silent partner in the investigation.

If you are not familiar with foreign cinema, you probably are unaccustomed to subtitles. (Unless, of course, you have a hearing problem). The subtitles in Forbrydelsen fade as the story takes hold. The details are very hard to hear; the viewer is spared little. While the plot grips the viewer, Lund is latching on to the evidence. Like any good sleuth, she connects dots and makes intuitive leaps over gaps in circumstantial evidence. Lund's identity is bound up in her role of homicide detective. Her great failing is her inability to to separate her professional and personal lives; she doesn't understand those who do. But she demands more of herself than she does from anyone else. She also doesn't believe in short-cuts and insists rules are followed in interrogations.

The backdrop is an election - a race between an older, conservative incumbent and a younger, idealistic challenger. No one is as they seem. The plot twists one way and then another. And there are so many secrets. Viewers complained about red herrings, there are plenty! (What's a mystery without twists?) Detective Lund is meticulous; she follows the evidence wherever it takes her.

Forbrydelsen takes you down one road, then another, then another. Just when you think something is settled, it is revisited. Human behavior is like that. Murder doesn't fit into neat packages. Of course, this is a work of fiction, but it does illustrate how lives are destroyed by violence. No one emerges unscathed. No one is spared. If you'd enjoy a mystery wrapped in a thriller, seasoned generously with talent - make sure you see Forbrydelsen.

The Leather Boys (DVD) 1963 Review

An engaging hybrid of British 'kitchen sink' drama and American biker film, this atmospheric feature was considered daring in 1964 as it touched upon homosexuality, however obliquely. It has a suitably somber appearance in B&W but, filmed in CinemaScope, there is a certain elegance to its images.

Dot (Rita Tushingham) and Reg (handsome newcomer Colin Campbell), a young working-class couple, get married. She is sixteen, shallow, selfish, and vain. He is sweet, generally light-hearted, and thoughtful, but under pressure reverts to macho, blue-collar stereotype. As a result, they fight constantly and soon separate. Reg meets Pete, a flamboyant and extroverted biker, who becomes his best mate. They move in together while Reg sorts out his life. Despite Pete's constant mothering, possessiveness, and jealousy, naive Reg only figures out that his friend is in love with him when Pete is outed in a dockside bar at the end of the film. Typically, there could be no happy endings for gay men in 1964.

The film is especially interesting due to the photography, period locations, and the early cinematic homosexual reference. Colin Campbell is beautiful, a wonderful actor, and quite suited to the role of a confused youth trying hard, but not prepared, to be an adult. His pretty, boyish presence is essential to the theme of sexual repression which precipitates all the minor tragedies and frustrations in his life.

This Televista version is a poor Pan&Scan version. There are two widescreen issues, from Kino (out of print) and Blackhorse (Region 2), well worth searching for. It makes a great difference to see the film in its original form without half the screen missing. The wide format is especially convincing in the road and racing sequences.
