Being a Big Alabama 3 Fan, I was searching for this DVD when I read Randy's review and snagged it. It is very enjoyable and fulfilling--especially since The London Astoria is such a warm atmosphere to hold a Live Concert in. It reminded me very much of The Palladium in Hollywood, CA--where I saw many a fine Live Concert in the past. The performers are outstanding--especially the small, energetic female back up vocalist. They all worked smoothly together, for a fine representation of Alabama 3's unique "Sweet Pretty Country Acid House Music." Try it, you'll like it.

Metal Fighter Miku - Collection Review

Metal Fighter Miku begins from a ridiculous premise: assume that sometime in the future (one that looks rather like our own, yet has some amazingly advanced tech tucked away in odd corners) one of the most popular sports in the world is ... female pro wrestling, with the females in question wearing powered armor to make the combats more interesting.Add to this the standard stable of characters in fighting-anime -- the plucky main hero/heroine, the "handsome/beautiful one", the "tough one", and the "cute one", and a nemesis bent on forcing a final confrontation, and you seem set for some pretty stupid, and pedestrian, fare.Somehow, with all this going against it, Miku (like its eponymous heroine) triumphs against the odds. There's something endearing rather than cloying about the characters. Yes, we know their general type, but the writers manage to make them separate, if not tremendously original, characters. Miku keeps the spotlight most of the time, but the other characters -- even adversaries -- often get enough screen time to make us feel that they're not just cardboard props for Miku's journey. As time goes on, you get the feeling that "something else" -- you can't quite define what -- is going ON in this series, and that feeling gets stronger. Eventually, you find out, and while the "something else" isn't at all unheard-of in anime, in THIS anime it comes as quite a gratifying surprise. I was stunned to enjoy this one -- cynical as I was about it -- and having come to appreciate it as the simple but worthy entertainment it is, am glad to recommend it to others here. I have been searching for this type of product- a video class that I can follow on my own time and watch over and over again for techniques. This dvd is perfect for visual learners who want to learn to sew. You get four dvds, packed with video tutorials. Start at lesson 1, and continue through all the lessons to build skills. You also get a cd to print off a booklet of all lessons, carefully explained in a verbal format. It takes a little time to print off the booklet, but it is logically organized with shopping lists and needed items. The first few lessons start slowly, allowing you to gather sewing supplies and get to know your machine. Then you make a bunch of fun, useful projects. I try to make each project several times in order to get comfortable. Thus, everyone got satin pillowcases for Christmas. Tote bags are next- who's on my list? You also make a cute make-up bag, a glove pot-holder, a useful pincushion. All the skills are things you will use in the future to make your own projects. A zipper is a zipper, in a bag or on a skirt! The booklet also has a section in the back to make and post techniques, like clipped corners and French seams, so you can remember what those are. Georgie Melot is supposed to be working on a follow-up dvd, with more advanced techniques. I wish she would hurry. I want to smock. This product is perfect for the beginner, as it walks you through each step of the project. I am so happy with mine.

This excellent and faithful rendition of Boris Vassilyev's "A zori zdes' tikhie..." is finally available on Amazon! The novella and film are beloved in Russia and count among my own personal favorites. The setting is May 1942, a remote artillery base somewhere north of besieged Leningrad and west of bombed-out Murmansk. Sergeant Major Fedot Vaskov is exasperated with the misbehavior of his gunners and demands replacements: "No drunks! No womanizers!" He gets his wish when his entire regiment is replaced with teenage girl gunners fresh out of artillery training. Confusion reigns when the very conservative Vaskov must deal with the decidedly unsoldierly girlish antics of his troops. And each girl comes to the Army with a personal history: a tragedy, a disgrace, a hardship, a vengeance, a purpose. Together, they defy their frazzled starshina (Vaskov) and bond with eachother. Then one morning two German paratroopers are sighted in the woods. Vaskov and a squad of five girls set out to capture the enemy: Beautiful, bold Zhenya, the only survivor of her massacred Army family. Rita, a young mother, already widowed by the war. Painfully shy Galya, raised in an orphanage. Liza, the sturdy but daydreaming daughter of a drunken forester. And the translator, Sonya, who fears for her Jewish family in Minsk. She had been studying in Moscow when Belorussia fell to the Fascists. Little do any of them realize, there are not two but sixteen Germans, not simply soldiers but highly trained, armed-to-the-teeth special forces! Vaskov and his untrained troops must distract the enemy, delay their mission, and alert headquarters of their presence. A matter of duty soon becomes a matter of life and death. Under fire the girls bond with their Sergeant Major and display individual ingenuity and valor. But this is a story about war and none of these Russians is a "Rambo." I've read the novella and watched the video a dozen times and always shed tears. Never-the-less, the story is inspiring, not depressing; and is considered one of the most realistic depictions of the War by a Soviet author. It has retained its popularity because of its endearing theme: the courage of ordinary Soviet people. I hope the DVD will have English subtitles so that non-Russian speakers will finally have a chance to experience this famous film.
